Airgun Hunt the Hatsan Hercules 45 after Springbok!

23 June 2017 / 87 views / American AirgunHunter

June 23rd 2017 I brought the Hatsan Hercules .45 caliber PCP air rifle out to hunt one of my favorite antelope species in South Africa….. the Springbuck! Airgun Hunting in South Africa is great on many levels, but the diversity of game species is what keeps bringing me back. In this segment, my longtime friend and PH Andrew Myers and I spent two hours stalking a couple of small herds of springbok that were moving and feeding in a wide valley. We noticed small groups kept passing across a grassy hillside dotted with thornbrush, and found a place to set up an ambush. The wind was howling, and the first group passed us too far for a shot. But a little while later, a small group that had splintered off from the main herd started back our way. I think when I slipped the gun back on the sticks some of the animals heard …. Something….. though they were not too spooked. But then the animals in front started to move faster and a few in the back started to run. The ram I wanted was in the back of the group, and as he took a step, I thought he was going to run. I lined up the Hercules on his shoulder and let the shot fly. The 143 grain roundball hit right on my point of aim at 50 yards and dumped him on the spot. The roundball passed through both lungs, broke the offside shoulder, and came to rest under the skin.
